Description
A comforting and hearty cabbage casserole made with tender cabbage, savory onions, creamy sauce, and melted cheese, perfect as a simple family dinner or side dish.
Ingredients
- 1 medium green cabbage, chopped (about 1.2 kg)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 tablespoon butter
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and lightly grease a casserole dish.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and blanch the chopped cabbage for 5 minutes. Drain well and set aside.
- In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the onion until soft, then add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
- Sprinkle flour over the onion mixture, stir well, and slowly add milk while stirring until a smooth sauce forms.
- Season the sauce with salt, pepper, paprika, and thyme. Cook for 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened.
- In a large bowl, combine the cabbage, sauce, cheddar cheese, and half of the Parmesan cheese.
- Transfer the mixture to the prepared casserole dish.
- Mix breadcrumbs with melted butter and remaining Parmesan cheese, then sprinkle evenly on top.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes until bubbly and golden brown on top.
- Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
- You can add mushrooms or bell peppers for extra flavor.
- For a creamier texture, substitute half the milk with cream.
- This casserole can be prepared ahead and refrigerated before baking.
