Description

A comforting and hearty cabbage casserole made with tender cabbage, savory onions, creamy sauce, and melted cheese, perfect as a simple family dinner or side dish.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium green cabbage, chopped (about 1.2 kg)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and lightly grease a casserole dish.
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and blanch the chopped cabbage for 5 minutes. Drain well and set aside.
  3. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the onion until soft, then add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Sprinkle flour over the onion mixture, stir well, and slowly add milk while stirring until a smooth sauce forms.
  5. Season the sauce with salt, pepper, paprika, and thyme. Cook for 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened.
  6. In a large bowl, combine the cabbage, sauce, cheddar cheese, and half of the Parmesan cheese.
  7. Transfer the mixture to the prepared casserole dish.
  8. Mix breadcrumbs with melted butter and remaining Parmesan cheese, then sprinkle evenly on top.
  9. Bake for 30–35 minutes until bubbly and golden brown on top.
  10. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can add mushrooms or bell peppers for extra flavor.
