Description
A hearty, comforting casserole made with tender cabbage, seasoned ground beef, and layers of melted cheese baked until bubbly and golden.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small head green cabbage, chopped
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes, drained
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
- Add onion and garlic; sauté until softened.
- Season with paprika, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning.
- Stir in diced tomatoes and tomato sauce; simmer for 5 minutes.
- Meanwhile, blanch chopped cabbage in boiling water for 5 minutes, then drain well.
- Spread half of the cabbage in the baking dish.
- Top with half of the beef mixture and half of the cheese.
- Repeat layers with remaining cabbage, beef, and cheese.
- Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Drain cabbage well to avoid excess liquid.
- You can substitute ground turkey for a lighter option.
- Add red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
