Description

Classic stuffed cabbage rolls made with tender cabbage leaves filled with a savory mixture of ground meat and rice, slowly simmered in a rich tomato sauce for a comforting traditional meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 large green cabbage
  • 500 g ground beef
  • 0.5 cup uncooked white rice
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp dried parsley
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth or water
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and carefully remove cabbage leaves, blanching them for 2–3 minutes until flexible.
  2. In a bowl, mix ground beef, uncooked rice, onion, garlic, egg, salt, pepper, paprika, and parsley.
  3. Place a portion of filling onto each cabbage leaf, roll tightly, and tuck in the sides.
  4. Heat olive oil in a large pot or deep skillet over medium heat.
  5. Spread a thin layer of tomato sauce on the bottom of the pot.
  6. Arrange cabbage rolls seam-side down in the pot.
  7. Mix remaining tomato sauce, tomato paste, and broth, then pour over the rolls.
  8. Cover and simmer on low heat for 60–70 minutes until cabbage is tender and filling is cooked.
  9. Serve hot with extra sauce spooned over the rolls.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or lamb.
  • Leftovers taste even better the next day.
  • Serve with yogurt or sour cream on the side.
