Description

Savory and comforting French Onion Meatballs slow-cooked in a rich onion gravy. This easy crock pot recipe combines the flavors of caramelized onions, tender beef meatballs, and melted cheese for a hearty meal or party appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs frozen or homemade meatballs
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 packet (1 oz) dry onion soup mix
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden brown.
  2. Transfer the caramelized onions to the crock pot.
  3. Add the frozen or pre-cooked meatballs to the crock pot.
  4. Pour in beef broth, onion soup mix, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper. Stir to combine.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 4–6 hours or on high for 2–3 hours, until meatballs are heated through and flavors are well combined.
  6. Before serving, sprinkle shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese on top, cover again, and let it melt for 10–15 minutes.
  7. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot.

Notes

  • For extra richness, use homemade caramelized onions instead of soup mix.
  • Serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread for a complete meal.
  • Use turkey or chicken meatballs for a lighter version.
