Description
Irresistible French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes combine the savory, caramelized flavors of French onion soup with the comfort of a classic sloppy joe — melty, cheesy, and bursting with rich umami flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
- 1 teaspoon thyme (fresh or dried)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 4 slices provolone or Swiss cheese
- 4 brioche or hamburger buns, toasted
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat.
- Add sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 15–20 minutes until golden brown and caramelized.
- Stir in garlic and cook for another minute.
- Push the onions to the side of the skillet and add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spatula.
- Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Stir in Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
- Pour in the beef broth and bring to a simmer.
- Add the cornstarch slurry and stir until the mixture thickens to a saucy consistency, about 2–3 minutes.
- Reduce heat and place cheese slices over the beef mixture. Cover until melted.
- Spoon the cheesy beef and onion mixture onto toasted buns and serve warm.
Notes
- For extra indulgence, spread a little garlic butter on the buns before toasting.
- Use Swiss or Gruyère cheese for a more authentic French onion flavor.
- This filling can also be served over rice or mashed potatoes.
