Description

Irresistible French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes combine the savory, caramelized flavors of French onion soup with the comfort of a classic sloppy joe — melty, cheesy, and bursting with rich umami flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon thyme (fresh or dried)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 slices provolone or Swiss cheese
  • 4 brioche or hamburger buns, toasted

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 15–20 minutes until golden brown and caramelized.
  3. Stir in garlic and cook for another minute.
  4. Push the onions to the side of the skillet and add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spatula.
  5. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  6. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  7. Pour in the beef broth and bring to a simmer.
  8. Add the cornstarch slurry and stir until the mixture thickens to a saucy consistency, about 2–3 minutes.
  9. Reduce heat and place cheese slices over the beef mixture. Cover until melted.
  10. Spoon the cheesy beef and onion mixture onto toasted buns and serve warm.

Notes

  • For extra indulgence, spread a little garlic butter on the buns before toasting.
  • Use Swiss or Gruyère cheese for a more authentic French onion flavor.
  • This filling can also be served over rice or mashed potatoes.
