Description

A comforting casserole made with savory ground beef, caramelized onions, egg noodles, and a rich French onion–style sauce, all baked together with melted cheese for a hearty family-friendly meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 12 oz egg noodles
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 packet French onion soup mix
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded Swiss or Gruyere cheese
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a casserole dish.
  2. Cook the egg noodles according to package instructions, drain, and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until soft and caramelized, about 15–20 minutes.
  4. Add garlic to the onions and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. Add ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.
  6. Stir in the French onion soup mix, cream of mushroom soup, and beef broth. Simmer for 3–5 minutes.
  7. Add cooked noodles to the beef mixture and stir until well combined.
  8. Transfer the mixture to the prepared casserole dish and spread evenly.
  9. Top with mozzarella and Swiss (or Gruyere) cheese.
  10. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until bubbly and the cheese is melted and lightly golden.
  11. Remove from oven, let rest for 5 minutes, and serve warm.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey for a lighter version.
  • Add mushrooms for extra flavor and texture.
  • For a crispier top, broil for 2–3 minutes at the end.
