A rich and indulgent layered lasagna featuring a creamy cheese filling, hearty meat sauce, and plenty of melted mozzarella for a truly comforting Italian-American classic.
Ingredients
- 12 lasagna noodles
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 lb Italian sausage
- 1 small onion, diced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 15 oz ricotta cheese
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Cook lasagna noodles according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, cook ground beef, sausage, and onion over medium heat until browned. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute. Stir in marinara sauce, tomato sauce, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes.
- In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta, cream cheese, sour cream, egg, and Parmesan until smooth.
- Spread 1 cup meat sauce in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Layer noodles, cheese mixture, meat sauce, and mozzarella. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with sauce and mozzarella on top.
- Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until cheese is golden and bubbly.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with parsley and serve.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add a splash of red wine to the sauce while simmering.
- Make ahead: assemble lasagna, cover tightly, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking.
- Freezes well—bake from frozen with 20–25 extra minutes.
