Description

Cheesy Italian Sub Casserole is a hearty baked dish inspired by the flavors of a classic Italian sub sandwich. Layers of savory beef, turkey pepperoni, turkey salami, melted cheeses, peppers, and seasoned bread are baked together into a comforting family-style casserole.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf Italian bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 6 oz turkey pepperoni, sliced
  • 6 oz turkey salami, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded provolone cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup sliced banana peppers
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Spread the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  4. Add onion and bell peppers and cook for 4-5 minutes until softened.
  5. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  6. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat.
  7. Stir in Italian seasoning, oregano, salt, and black pepper.
  8. Add turkey pepperoni and turkey salami and cook for 2 minutes.
  9. Spread the meat mixture evenly over the bread cubes.
  10. Sprinkle mozzarella, provolone, and Parmesan cheeses evenly over the top.
  11. Whisk together eggs and milk in a bowl.
  12. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the casserole.
  13. Top with banana peppers.
  14. Allow the casserole to sit for 10 minutes so the bread absorbs the custard.
  15. Bake for 35-40 minutes until golden brown and set in the center.
  16. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
  17. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve warm.

Notes

  • Day-old Italian bread works best because it absorbs the custard without becoming mushy.
  • Provolone cheese adds authentic Italian sub flavor.
  • Add mushrooms, black olives, or roasted red peppers for extra toppings.
  • Serve with marinara sauce or a side salad.
  • Store leftovers refrigerated for up to 4 days.
