Description

French Onion Cheeseburger Rice is a hearty one-pan comfort meal featuring seasoned halal ground beef, caramelized onions, tender rice, and a rich, creamy cheese sauce inspired by the flavors of French onion soup. Finished with melted Gruyère and cheddar cheese, this satisfying dinner is perfect for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb halal lean ground beef
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 cups long-grain white rice, uncooked
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter in a large deep skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized. Remove and set aside.
  3. Add the remaining butter to the skillet, then cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain excess fat if needed.
  4. Stir in the garlic, Italian seasoning, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 30 seconds.
  5. Add the uncooked rice and stir for 1 minute to lightly toast it.
  6. Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, then return the caramelized onions to the skillet.
  7. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes until the rice is tender.
  8. Stir in the heavy cream, Gruyère cheese, and cheddar cheese until melted and creamy.
  9. Cook for 2-3 minutes until everything is well combined.
  10. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Slowly caramelizing the onions develops the signature rich French onion flavor.
  • Freshly shredded cheese melts more smoothly than pre-shredded cheese.
  • Add sautéed mushrooms for even more depth of flavor.
  • If the rice becomes too thick, stir in a splash of warm beef broth before serving.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
