Description
French Onion Cheeseburger Rice is a hearty one-pan comfort meal featuring seasoned halal ground beef, caramelized onions, tender rice, and a rich, creamy cheese sauce inspired by the flavors of French onion soup. Finished with melted Gruyère and cheddar cheese, this satisfying dinner is perfect for busy weeknights.
Ingredients
- 1 lb halal lean ground beef
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 1/2 cups long-grain white rice, uncooked
- 3 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter in a large deep skillet over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions and cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized. Remove and set aside.
- Add the remaining butter to the skillet, then cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain excess fat if needed.
- Stir in the garlic, Italian seasoning, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 30 seconds.
- Add the uncooked rice and stir for 1 minute to lightly toast it.
- Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, then return the caramelized onions to the skillet.
- Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes until the rice is tender.
- Stir in the heavy cream, Gruyère cheese, and cheddar cheese until melted and creamy.
- Cook for 2-3 minutes until everything is well combined.
- Garnish with fresh parsley and serve immediately.
Notes
- Slowly caramelizing the onions develops the signature rich French onion flavor.
- Freshly shredded cheese melts more smoothly than pre-shredded cheese.
- Add sautéed mushrooms for even more depth of flavor.
- If the rice becomes too thick, stir in a splash of warm beef broth before serving.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
