Description

One-Pan French Onion Beef Rice Bake is a comforting and hearty casserole featuring seasoned ground beef, tender rice, caramelized onion flavors, rich beef broth, and melted cheese baked together in one pan for an easy family dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup long-grain white rice, uncooked
  • 2 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed French onion soup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella or Gruyère cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add sliced onions and cook for 10-12 minutes until deeply caramelized.
  4. Stir in garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.
  6. Stir in rice, thyme, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  7. Pour in beef broth, condensed French onion soup, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well.
  8. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  9. Cover tightly with a lid or foil and bake for 25-30 minutes until the rice is tender.
  10. Remove from the oven and sprinkle cheese evenly over the top.
  11. Return to the oven uncovered for 5-7 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  12. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve warm.

Notes

  • Gruyère cheese provides the most authentic French onion flavor.
  • For extra richness, stir in 1/4 cup heavy cream before baking.
  • Brown rice may be substituted but requires additional liquid and cooking time.
  • Add mushrooms for extra depth of flavor.
  • Store leftovers refrigerated for up to 4 days.
