Description

Smoky Honey BBQ Sausage Rice is a hearty one-pan meal featuring savory halal smoked beef sausage, tender rice, sweet honey barbecue sauce, and colorful vegetables. This smoky, sweet, and savory skillet dinner is perfect for busy weeknights and comes together in about 40 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 14 oz halal smoked beef sausage, sliced into rounds
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 cups long-grain white rice, uncooked
  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup honey BBQ sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup frozen corn
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 green onions, sliced (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large deep skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the sliced sausage and cook for 4-5 minutes until browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium and melt the butter in the same skillet.
  4. Add the onion and bell pepper and cook for 4 minutes until softened.
  5. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  6. Add the uncooked rice and stir for 1 minute to lightly toast it.
  7. Pour in the chicken broth, honey BBQ sauce, honey, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Stir well.
  8. Return the sausage to the skillet and bring the mixture to a boil.
  9. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes until the rice is tender.
  10. Stir in the corn during the last 5 minutes of cooking.
  11. Remove from the heat and let stand for 5 minutes.
  12. Garnish with parsley and green onions before serving.

Notes

  • Halal smoked beef or turkey sausage both work well in this recipe.
  • For extra heat, add diced jalapeños or crushed red pepper flakes.
  • Brown the sausage well to develop a deeper smoky flavor.
  • If using brown rice, increase both the broth and cooking time.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
